5: Double Edge – Bearings
by Captain Tobias Cook & Admiral Gwena Max & Marine Captain Daniel Odonell
As they set out to try and get aquainted with the lay of the land, each group needed to try and find perameters for them to properly analize the planet.
"Cook to Jameson, anything yet?"
Major Rak'Tazan stood at point he was facing the wind. He was looking for points of reference. He knew that if the electronics went down they were going to need to keep their bearings. "Captain Odonell, what does your nose tell you? " Rak'Tazan said pointing to the east.
Daniel sniffed the air and soon regretted it, there was more sand in the air than anything else he caughed for a second then reported, "bogies upwind, there aren't too many of them, but they're there. I could recon ahead, they'd never spot me."
Rak'Tazan said. "Go, but do not take any undo risk!"
The Cadian looked around then faded out of existence, he dropped to all fours and move up on their hostiles. He moved slow, steadily and as quiet as ever forward, as he neared the ideal position he went on belly and pretty much low crawled as close as he could safely get.
The sight ahead of the marine was entirely unexpected, now since coming aboard he had very little intel on what they were against, but seeing an of his people like the Romulans was something way out there. It took everything he had to not take his phaser and have a nice game of duck hunt.
Rak'Tazan reported to Commander Cook. "I have Captain Odonell reconning to the east. We have bogies that direction. He in route to type and numbers, sir."
After a few minutes of gathering what he could, Daniel pulled back to the rest of the group, he decloaked next to the Major and Commander, "Sirs, we've got Romulans over there, five so far" he said, thinking of their group as a party he desperately wanted to crash.
Continuing to move through the area Tobias tried to gather some readings to send back to Atlantis for analysis. Stoping at the news of the Romulans. "What do you mean Romulans?"
"Three soldiers and two technicians" Daniel answered, "they were scanning everything over there, wouldn't be surprised if we're on their scans."
"If they are not crash victims. Then they are an advance scout party. We need to keep our guard up. Sir." Stated Maj. Rak'Tazan.
"Agreed. Stay close but keep them in our sights. The last thing we need is an ambush, there could be others."
Daniel resumed his cloak, if any Romulans got the drop on them, at least they't have one more problem than they had counted on before starting things. "If they're anywhere that close, they're being pretty quiet" Daniel said, even he couldn't always smell them they'd have to be dead to not be heard.
Tobias was picking up a vital sign in the distance. "It looks like we have something over here that appears to be human."
"Okay, Odonell stay on our left flank. I will take point." Rak'Tazan said.
"Aye sir" Daniel said, seeming to come out of nowhere. He kept a slow pace and a good eye out, though so far he didn't see a thing, just more and more emptiness.
The tricorder began to fizzle as the signal was lost. "Perhaps it was nothing. Let's spend a few minutes and head back."
"Sir, we might want to double time that evac" Daniel said, pretty much coming to a complete halt to focus on his hearing, "those Rommies are hot on our six, we've gotta be on their sensors."
"Captain Cook, Odonell and I will slow them now You and Lt. jameson head on ahead." Stated Rak'Tazn.
"Odonell, We will set a a cross fire. You take left I will right. " Rak'Tazan ordered while pointing to an out crop of stones. " Use hand weapons and pick them off from the rear one at a time." With his last statement Rak'Tazan shrouded him selfand headed for the stones. "You are not the only one who can disappear." And the sound of a laughter trailed off to the distance.
"Aye sir" Daniel said, standing up on his hind legs in a crouch and finding some cover to fire from. As the enemy approached he brought his gun up, planning on putting that old sniping skill to use; drop em' one by one. All the while his ears seemed to twitch, moving like radar dishes tracking a target, then he remembered the captain, "captain, get over here and stay close." Mind not that the captain had rank, safety took precedence.
Rak'Tazan moved up behind Odonell and unshrouded himself. And he motioned for Captain Cook and Lt. Jameson to tothe same outcrop too. "What is it Odonell?"
"Its a different group approaching" Daniel said, "no scientists, just soldiers, armed to kill first and probably ask never." The marine concentrated for a second and managed to expand his cloak out around the group, though if he kept it up to long it was gonna start to hurt. Inside he became visible to the whole team. Through gritted teeth he said, "stay close, I've got us all under my cloak, they won't be able to read us."
"Captain Cook, what do you want us to do? This is your mission and I believe we could take them if we play this right." Rak'Tazan questioning his commanding officer. "So what is our orders?"
As Tobias was about to give direction, an urgent message from the ship came accross.
"Sir we are taking massive fire, we need to evacuate at once."
"Understood. Lock onto our coordinates and get us out of here."
"Akcnowledged sir."
Within a flash, the team was transported to the Atlantis.
For several seconds the transporter platform was empty, or at least appeared that way. Daniel had been focusing too much on keeping a cloak up to really care where they were, then after a few seconds it finally came on him and he passed out; falling to the decking with a loud thud. Expanded cloaks weren't uncommon, but they really drew on energy, something this particular Cadian had a lacking of.
Tobias looked at the others, "Get to your stations."
With the order from the Captain to take up stations. Rak'Tazan grabbed odonell but the back of his flax jacket and hauled him to the medical dept. on his way to the Marine stationing area. "Come on lad we have no time for sleeping!"
The ship rocked as the multiple hits were given from the Romulan ship.
"Status report!" Tobias yelled.
"Sir we are stable but need to get out of here, we can't take much more."
"Set a course for the nearest starbase and engage at maximum warp."
"Aye sir."
